IT’S THE FLING ITSELF

In response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Burnt.”

It’s interesting to see what comes to mind when I read certain prompts. Today, it went to things having nothing to do with what I would, or would not save/do were my house burning to the ground. As I read the directions – knowing I didn’t do the actual post to which this pings back  – I right away flashed on an episode from Northern Exposure; the episode I think of as the FLING ep.

In that story line, poor Maggie, whose house went up in flames, wasn’t able to salvage anything. She never had the chance to run in and grab those five items to take with her. It all happened when she wasn’t even there.

But what comes to mind, most, is when she was rooting through the wreckage of her life, (the prompt of today’s post) realizing, that at that moment in time, she  was homeless. Enter Chris, the local DJ and artist, philosopher, and however many other things he was to the community. He comes by looking for something for a creative endeavor after finding out from another local, that what he had in mind had already been done. There, in the remnants of Maggie’s world was an old, charred piano. He asks Maggie if he might have this, and she agrees. As the episode continues to its end, Chris, as often happens in Cicely, gathers all the residents together to witness yet another imaginative moment:

At some point in the reading of your post, not only did I smile at recalling that wonderful old show Northern Exposure…but I was amazed to realize that I actually remembered that episode.
That was a very neat piece of writing you pulled out of the charred memory remains of a sit com!
Well done. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you!!! Yes, it really was a wonderful show. We eventually bought the series, since we wanted to be able to vacation in Cicely again, and again. The sad part is that they’ve removed all the great music from the DVDs that were in the original airing. BUT, I also still have the show (most of it anyway) on video – and happily still have vcrs to view them. There is so much I remember from the show, when I least expect it.

They took the original music out of the DVDs. That is part of what made the show so great. What they replaced it with was nothing more than elevator music. I guess either the producers did not want to pay the royalties for the music in the series, or the musicians’ reps were causing the problem. I do have a lot of the music on two CDs I bought when the soundtrack came out. But there are some moments that were in the show not on the soundtrack. Oh well.

BUT, you have given me an idea! Back in the beginning there were videos of the show put out after each season. I never thought of it before, but it is likely that the videos do have the original music. I’ll also bet someone somewhere in the marketplace has them. It’s an old series, so it is possible that someone is looking to sell them… Hmmmmm… Thanks for the inspiration!!! 🙂

Sorry! I misunderstood what you were saying… Let me look for it again, and post it here.

Here’s another video of that scene:

Oh, Fim. I just love this! I loved that show! I bought the set for my girlfriend a couple of years ago. It didn’t occur to me the music wasn’t in it. I wanted to borrow it from her. I mean, I still will, but I’m glad I am forewarned about the music! This scene is so glorious! I love Chris’ speech, and the reactions of everyone. I love all the characters. Thank you so much for this. It IS the fling itself.
    Love,
    Mary

I’m SO glad that you find the same joy I have from this amazing series. I do believe it is one of my favorites of all time. I always imagine living in a town like that, and the relationships and the community spirit and each character had something amazing to bring to the show. I wanted to record every single one of Chris in the Morning parts and have it to listen to every morning when we eat breakfast! How cool would that be?

Yes! That is one of THE best speeches, though there were SO many! Do you remember the one with the Northern Lights? Great speech at the end, about light. I looked for it, but they don’t have it up on Youtube right now.

Sadly, the DVDs when released, did not contain any of the original songs which were used in the series. Still, I do have them on video – most of them – still. So as long as I have a vcr, I’ll have all the original songs. 🙂

It’s my pleasure to have this great Northern Exposure moment to brighten up your day!

      Love and Light

That would be great to have a recording of Chris in the morning. If someone were to ask me who my favorite character in the show is, I don’t think I could say. They are all so unique. I so loved that series.

I agree! Each one is someone I’d want to hangout with, and we have named our kitchen “The Brick,” in honor of Holling and Shelly’s place. Oh, and our bedroom is ‘Tranquility Base,’ which if I remember, is what Maurice called his when Barbara was with him – or maybe all the time. I think it’s time to revisit lol
