The Monday Music Medicine Show

Welcome to the Monday Medicine Show

I was reading over at Impromptu Promptlings, a post from Lady Calen, which featured an old 60s British Invasion group, The Searchers. She used their hit, “Needles and Pins” to showcase them. While reading comments, I came across another version I’d not heard before, but which I liked quite a lot.

This got me thinking about the fact that it is inevitable that a later generation, growing up with influential music, will want to try their hand at covering it. I tend to have a preference for the first group’s version.

Case in point is a song by The Beatles, which was also later recorded by Aerosmith, another favorite group of mine. I still favor The Beatles version.

BEATLES:

Aerosmith:

In a reverse of the situation, Aerosmith does a cover of a favorite song by The Shangri-las, “Remember Walking in the Sand.” I recall loving the original, but when I heard Aerosmith do it, I was sold!

The Shangri-las:

Aerosmith:

For me Dream On by Aerosmith could not be done by anyone else because this is such an outstanding classic, nobody could do a it justice except Steven Tyler.

So my beautiful Monday Music Medicine Show friends, what songs that you love have you felt nobody else could cover it, or found a cover which you liked better than a favored group? You know I want to hear it. Please share the songs that fit this situation.

Share it there (your own blog with a ping back), or share it here.

BYOM and  remember: It Don’t Mean A Thing If You Don’t Send That PING!

Music is the Medicine in my Soul and I hope yours is as healing and nurturing as mine!

I was so surprised a song popped into my head immediately when I read your post. This was a really good challenge!

Oh, and I LOVED the song which popped into your head! There are so many songs from yester year that I swoon all over again when I hear them. That’s the problem with having a playlist which is connected to specific computers… they go down with the ship when the computer goes down. *sigh* But I’m just happy to seem them resurface here in The Monday Music Medicine Show 🙂

Yeah, I agree…nobody does the Beatles like the Beatles. But if they hadn’t done that song, Aerosmith did do a fairly good job of it. However, not that good on Walking on the Sand. Nobody does that song like the Shangri-las. Maybe it’s hard to out-do any original? Except maybe the Beatles Twist and Shout. No…that one’s too close to call.

I think when a song is beloved over decades, and someone comes along, even if their own attempt is paying homage to influences, I so often cannot get past that it’s just not like the original. But, here’s the point of that. Let’s say someone hears the cover version first, and loves it, and then goes back to listen to the original. Would they be able to say it was better than their own favorite? So often I think it has to do with who a person hears do something first.

Hmmm… Twist and Shout. That’s a tough one… But I’m SO used to hearing John’s voice, it just does it more for me.
