At one of my favorite hangouts, Impromptu Promptlings, on this bright and sunny Wednesday, I found Tuesday’s Sandbox Writing Challenge, which the lovely Lady Calen has brought to us this week. In a two part question, we’re asked:
- What part of YOU is locked inside this house?
2. What can you do to free that part of yourself?
The house can be seen at the link listed above. It’s quite a lovely looking house. It has at least 3 stories, with a fourth beneath ground; the basement. It looks to have air conditioning, and I’m sure, it has heat. It’s likely to have a kitchen, with a stove, refrigerator, dishes, pots and pans, and a nicely stocked pantry. There’s hopefully at least two bathrooms, and several rooms to serve as personal domain, and shared space.
Oh and look, there’s a porch I can put a rocking chair on, and sit and watch the world go by. And that yard, beautiful, as long as there’s not another house for a mile in any direction.
I can’t think of any reason to want to leave the house. You see, to the agoraphobically challenged, this is a paradise, a safe house, if you will.
Now you ask me about a building like this:
and I’m going Great Escape on you, to get the hell out of Dodge. If I couldn’t dig a tunnel out, I’d find sanctuary – as I’ve done in my life at work, and other places during the worse of times – in something like this:
So the answer would be, no part of me is locked inside or more importantly, feels trapped. I’m there because I want to be. One of my favorite lines from a book is, “It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.” – Bilbo Baggins
That is pretty much how this lovely house made me feel. It does make the second part of the question a moot point.
Granted, I may be missing the point altogether, but it wouldn’t be the first time.
Music tells it all:

Yeah, it didn’t sort of work for me on the questions. I’d rather stay at home. Not forever, and in the summer I’ll venture out, but I never really feel like I’m stuck inside, except for when I was having a major agoraphobia situation.
This song I found just before I was ready to post. I went to Youtube and wanted to find the appropriate song. I put in the word trapped, and there it was. Perfect, because the fact is, I’m trapped in my mind. That’s the problem. Would the house represent the mind? then I’d have been able to write something different.

I would think the house could represent anything you wanted it to. Try it again. It might be interesting to see what you come up with.

Thinking about it, as you suggest to try it again, I’d say, the house IS me. That would probably work, because I AM trapped inside of me, but there is no way out… short of the end of my life.

Isn’t it amazing how differently we ‘see’ the house. I shared my post with Jim and before he read it but just looked at the house he ‘liked’ how the house looked….for me, the photo wasn’t ‘homey’ or appealing to me looking,,,which I think is why I went in the direction I did?!?!?

It is amazing to see how each of us sees the questions, the pictures. At first I didn’t quite understand, but I knew that the house was safety for me. Then I always think, but that’s probably not what the questions were trying to get out of me. Never the less, it is where I was led by my strange little muse.

Enjoyed the Kid Cudi song, and was it a the Harry Potter’s reference? “Ministry of Magic” makes me think of a special short cut via the “Marauder’s Map” via the magic white porcelain. Or maybe it’s “Moaning Murtle’s” point of access – as the bathroom was her thang. Regardless, it made me laugh – sort of like Dadaism. Neat prompts, neat responses. Having fun. 🙂

The song is new to me, and the minute I heard it, I knew it was perfect for this challenge. Yes, absolutely it was a Harry Potter reference. The entire series of movies is part of our New Years (Samhain) viewing. I LOVE the “Marauder’s Map!” It’s been one of my favorite ideas which came out in the books and film. There was an actual entrance to the Ministry through a bathroom stall, at one point, but “Moaning Murtle” was very much the porcelain gal. 🙂 They have been quite good, these prompts, even if they don’t always make sense to me at first.
So happy for your visit here! Always a pleasure to see you!

Had you seen the video? Either way, I do enjoy finding new songs.
Sometimes I’ll spend an hour or two just following the list of suggested videos, and end up with many new additions to my playlist.
