The Perpetual Letter: P

Post Apocalyptic

I ended yesterday’s Challenge post saying I was going to watch the newest episode (for me) of the popular series “The Walking Dead.”

This is just the most recent of many, many series about life AFTER the end of the world. To be honest, I’m not really sure what it is that I love about these shows. There have been many. Can I remember my first? No. But somewhere I must have watched something, or read something which swept me into that realm.

My favorite book is “The Stand,” by Stephen King. I’ve read it quite many times since 1984, and let me tell you, it is a rather sizeable book!

I have a memory of taking walks in a many trailed park here in upstate New York, when my family first moved up here. As I traversed the twisting, turning paths, I’d imagine I was one of those people moving through a world where everything had stopped, where all the wheels of technology had gone south because our species had a prediliction for self-destruction.

Once, in a blogging challenge about quotes, one of the first I remember posting was, “We are the archetects of our own annihilation.” That hit home big time as wars were being waged on a global level, and it was nothing new to the creatures we are. This quote came from a post apocalypic series, “Jeremiah.”

What about this kind of circumstance left its imprint on me? Perhaps it was that I felt a reboot would serve homo sapia well, where we were all put back on a level playing field. Would we learn from our mistakes? I don’t know. I fear not, but it seemed like there was something necessary in that kind of lesson which might well finally be learned.
